We install potable, storm, sewer and reclaimed water networks in GRP, uPVC, HDPE and RCP. Clients often arrive with the material already chosen, and occasionally it is the wrong one for the ground it is going into. This is the comparison we would give at tender stage.
What each one is actually good at

The coastal argument
On the Red Sea coast three things push the decision: chloride, a high water table, and ground temperature.
Chloride is the reason GRP appears so often in this region on reclaimed and industrial water. It does not corrode, so the specification stops being a debate about coatings and cathodic protection.
A high water table changes the failure you should worry about. An empty pipe below the water table can float or buckle before it ever sees internal pressure. That is a bedding and surround problem, and it is where GRP is least forgiving.
Ground temperature matters for HDPE, whose pressure rating is quoted at 20 degrees and derates above it. A PE100 pipe sized on the catalogue figure can be undersized in the ground it is actually going into.
The question that settles it
Ask what happens at the joint. GRP and uPVC networks fail at joints far more often than in the barrel, and a reclaimed water network has a joint every few metres. HDPE moves the risk from the joint to the weld, which is a risk you can control by qualifying the operator and testing the fusion.
If the route has settlement risk, ground movement, or a service that must not leak into groundwater, that reasoning usually points at HDPE regardless of what the bill of quantities says.
What we test before handover
Pressure testing on every network, and site acceptance testing with the records issued at handover. A network that has not been tested is not a network, it is a trench that has been backfilled.
